The Yakama Sun Kings are the defending CBA champions.
In front of 726 spectators at the Civic Center Saturday night, the Sun Kings showed why.
The Butte Daredevils, on the other had, showed that they could use a good nap.
Five Sun Kings scored in double digits as Yakama easily defeated a sleepy Butte squad, 97-70.
The Daredevils, who didn’t win a single quarter while falling to
2-3 on the season, arrived home from a two-game trip to Pittsburgh at 2:30 Saturday morning.
“It’s no excuse for not thinking,” Butte coach Patrick O’Herron said of his team’s lackluster performance. “We had too many mental mistakes. I can live with some physical ones, but mental ones are starting to bother me.”
The Sun Kings (5-0) didn’t seem to make any mistakes.
“We feel that we’re very deep, we’re very experienced,” said Yakama coach Paul Woolpert, last year’s CBA coach of the year. “We’ve got a group that’s comfortable with each other, and we’re off to a great start.”
Just when the young Daredevils seemed primed to pick up the first quarter point, Yakama kicked it up a gear.
Ray Weathers buried a base-line 3-pointer to tie the game at 23 with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.
Just 23 seconds later, Weathers sank two free throws to give Yakama the lead for good at 25-23.
Sparked by NBA veteran Moochie Norris, the Sun Kings broke the game open early in the second quarter.
Norris, who came off the bench and led the team with five assists, scored all seven of his points as Yakama opened the second frame with a 13-3 run to make it 38-26.
“Moochie is a great team guy, and he’s a leader,” Woolpert said. “The guys know he’s played a lot of years in the NBA and he comes down here and really helps us play a very unselfish brand of basketball.”
Yakama maintained the 12 point margin and took a 52-40 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Sun Kings doused any Butte comeback hopes with a 15-7 run, capped by a Tim Ellis hoop off a nice pass from Jason Forte to make it a 67-47 game.
The Sun Kings kept the heat on through the fourth quarter to capture all 7 possible points.
“That’s the best team in minor league basketball. Period,” O’Herron said. “They’re put it together. They have experience at every position. They can score it; they can pass it. They’re good.”
Weathers led the way with a game-high 16 points. Ellis added 14 points, while Harvey Thomas scored 13 and Desmond Ferguson and Jermaine Blackburn each scored 11.
All 10 Sun Kings scored, with Jason Sasser missing double digits by one point.
“I keep tell our guys it must be fun to play on this team because we’re very unselfish,” Woolpert said. “We play together and we all get each other good shots. It’s got to be a lot of fun.”
Thomas also pulled down 10 rebounds as Yakama dominated the Daredevils on the glass, holding a 51-34 advantage.
Benson Callier, who handed out a team-leading four assists, and Aaron Cook led the Daredevils with 13 points.
Lionel Davis, who is quickly turning into a fan favorite, added 10 points, while Jason Miller threw down a pair of two-handed dunks on his way to eight points.
Sir Valient Brown came off the bench to give the Daredevils a spark with seven points, all in two-minute span covering the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter.
The Daredevils get another crack at the kings of the CBA at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Center.
O’Herron is hoping a good night’s sleep will make a world of difference for his team.
“We just got to come with energy,” he said.
