Daredevils feel Sun Kings’ heat

The Yakama Sun Kings emerged from the Butte Civic Center unscathed with a 93-81 victory over the Butte Daredevils on Sunday.
The win gives defending CBA champion Yakama a perfect 7-0 mark on the season. The Yakima, Wash. squad also added to its league-leading standings points total. The squad tilted Butte 97-70 on Saturday.
Although the Daredevils (2-4) played better on Sunday, all the team could muster was one-half of a point in standings for splitting the second quarter score, 23-23.
After a solid first-half effort, Butte was down 49-45, but fell apart in the third quarter as they scored only 15 points to Yakama’s 21. The Daredevils’ shooting percentage took a hit in the latter half as it fell from 43 to 35 percent.
“(Yakama) plays good team defense,” Daredevils coach Patrick O’Herron said. “And they don’t miss many shots.” The Sun Kings finished successful on 46 percent of shots from the field. The squad also showed a balanced attack with five players scoring in double digits.
Jason Forte led Sunday’s attack with 17 points. Desmond Ferguson and Jason Sasser pitched in 13 and 12. Jermaine Blackburn and former NBA second-round pick Moochie Norris chipped in 11 points each.
On offense, O’Herron admitted the Daredevils struggled to make the right passes at the right times.
“We’re too young right now to make the right reads,” O’Herron said. “We’re going to practice on it.” Highlights for the Daredevils included a 22-point and 11-rebound performance by Jason Miller. The Oklahoma State product could make another run to return the CBA rebounding title to Butte this season.
Miller, Lionel Davis and Blake Scholberg both made some nice plays down low in the first half. O’Herron felt that was key in the team’s much-improved first half performance.
“We were physical,” O’Herron said. “Our big men were a presence.” Benson Callier and Davis notched 13 and 12 points for the Daredevils.
Jibril Hodges may still be recovering from an injury he suffered last week. He scored seven points in 30 minutes, but went an uncharacteristic 1-for-6 from long distance.
O’Herron said being able to knock down shots made a big difference in Sunday’s result.
“We have to knock down more shots,” O’Herron said. “You can’t make mistakes on lay-ups and open shots.” Butte’s CBA squad returns to action in Kentucky on Wednesday. They return to the Mining City on Saturday to face Great Falls.
